| Technical Notes: The source of the numerator is Cancer Research Center of Hawaii (CRCH) database of stores selling tobacco. The source of the denominator is U.S. Census Bureau -- 1990-99 County Population Estimates and 2000 Census data. This version follows the federal definition, for which rates are based on resident population only, thereby ignoring tourist demand and overstating actual rates. The CRCH database preserves only the statewide total number; county figures are available only at the time of inquiry (which, for us, was June 2001). Notes on data quality and data patterns for social indicators related to substance abuse. | |||||||||||
| Importance of the Indicator: This is an indicator of the availability of cigarettes and other tobacco products. Young people are more likely to smoke if cigarettes are readily available. According to national health officials, more than 80% of adults who are addicted to tobacco began smoking as adolescents. | |||||||||||
