| Technical Notes: The source of the numerator is Cancer Research Center of Hawaii (CRCH) database of stores selling tobacco. The source of the denominator is Hawaii State Dept. of Business, Economic Development & Tourism. This version includes tourists in the denominator of the rate, giving a more accurate pic- ture of true Hawaii rates. It should be noted that the CRCH database omits military outlets and mobile locations like lunchwagons. The database gives county data only as of 2001. No licenses are required for tobacco sale in Hawaii; data gathered by on-site counts. Notes on data quality and data patterns for social indicators related to substance abuse. | |||||||||||
| Importance of the Indicator: This is an indicator of the availability of cigarettes and other tobacco products. Young people are more likely to smoke if cigarettes are readily available. According to national health officials, more than 80% of adults who are addicted to tobacco began smoking as adolescents. | |||||||||||
