Technical Notes: The source of the numerator is Hawaii State Dept. of Labor & Industrial Relations, Labor Force Research Section. The source of the denominator is Hawaii State Dept. of Labor & Industrial Relations, Labor Force Research Section. The State Dept. of Labor & Industrial Relations estimates unemployment rates by combining data from a number of sources. Numbers for recent years are subject to revision as new information is considered. Also, the rate is based on civilian labor force, which may omit some "discouraged workers" no longer actively seeking work. Notes on data quality and data patterns for social indicators related to substance abuse.
Importance of the Indicator: This is one measure of extreme economic and social deprivation. Unemployment is clearly related to a family's well being, with job loss almost always resulting in decreased economic security. Unemployment can also lead to changes in personal mental health and family dynamics and affect residential stability, putting children at a higher risk for developing problem behaviors including substance abuse.
