Technical Notes: The source of the numerator is U.S. Census Bureau -- 1990 and 2000 Census data. The source of the denominator is U.S. Census Bureau -- 1990 and 2000 Census data. The federal definition for this indicator specifies use of decennial (1990 and 2000) Census figures. The Census Bureau actually produces estimates of this statistic for intervening years, but they are estimates only and we do not include them here because of conflict with the specified definition. Notes on data quality and data patterns for social indicators related to substance abuse.
Importance of the Indicator: Parents are the most important adults in most children’s lives. Although the simple presence of two parents does not guarantee a nurturing atmosphere, two parent families usually have more time and resources available to provide appropriate guidance and supervision for their children. Lack of parental supervision is a risk factor for substance use among adolescents.
