Technical Notes: The source of the numerator is Hawaii State Dept. of Transportation, Highway Division, Traffic Branch. The source of the denominator is Hawaii State Dept. of Transportation data on total number of traffic fatalities. The number of alcohol accidents may be understated because they are based on initial Motor Vehicle Accident Results, which may not include final blood test results. Also, apparent INCREASES over time in the PERCENTAGE of fatalities attributed to alcohol could be due to decreasing NUMBERS of NON-alcohol-related fatalities. Notes on data quality and data patterns for social indicators related to substance abuse.
Importance of the Indicator: The use of alcohol and excess speed is often seen as connected with motor vehicle accidents and is of concern especially because of the high fatality and injury rates for young people.
