| Technical Notes: The source of the numerator is Hawaii State Dept. of the Attorney General, "Crime in Hawaii" annual report. The source of the denominator is U.S. Census Bureau -- 1990-99 County Population Estimates and 2000 Census data. Notes for Indicator 22 also apply to these figures. It should further be noted that arrest data can lead to very different conclusions about which counties have "more crime" than do rates based on reported crime. By the latter measure, Honolulu (not Maui or Hawaii Counties, as below) generally had "more violent crime" over the past decade. Notes on data quality and data patterns for social indicators related to substance abuse. | |||||||||||
| Importance of the Indicator: This measure is a reflection of the most serious crimes: homicide, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. A community's crime rate affects the daily behaviors of its members: Whether children are allowed out to play, the activities undertaken and when, by family members in areas near the home, and the spirit of “aloha” that is extended to others in the community. | |||||||||||
