| Technical Notes: The source of the numerator is Hawaii State Dept. of the Attorney General, "Crime in Hawaii" annual report. The source of the denominator is Hawaii State Dept. of Business, Economic Development & Tourism. This version is an alternative to Indicator 24(a). It presents rates based on"De Facto" population, which includes average number of visitors present and average number of residents absent. This gives a more realistic picture of Hawaii's true homicide rates. However, these vary so much from year to year that the difference is hard to appreciate. Notes on data quality and data patterns for social indicators related to substance abuse. | |||||||||||
| Importance of the Indicator: Homicide is the ultimate violation of personal and community safety, and often takes place when the perpetrators are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. | |||||||||||
