| Technical Notes: The source of the numerator is Hawaii State Dept. of the Attorney General, "Crime in Hawaii" annual report. The source of the denominator is U.S. Census Bureau -- 1990-99 County Population Estimates and 2000 Census data. Data sum up arrests for burglary, larceny theft, and motor vehicle theft, which are "Part I" serious property crimes under the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) system. For such crimes, reported crime RATES give a better overall picture, but lose the juvenile-adult breakdown. Hawaii once did, but no longer does, include arson in this category. Notes on data quality and data patterns for social indicators related to substance abuse. | |||||||||||
| Importance of the Indicator: Property crimes include larceny-theft, burglary, auto theft, and arson. Such crimes affect the safety and well-being of community members. They hold potential for more violent crimes to be committed in the process. Property crimes are often associated with the use of substances. | |||||||||||
