Technical Notes: The source of the numerator is Hawaii State Dept. of the Attorney General, "Crime in Hawaii" annual report. The source of the denominator is U.S. Census Bureau -- 1990-99 County Population Estimates and 2000 Census data. Notes for Indicator 26 also apply to these figures. It should further be noted that arrest data can lead to very different conclusions about which counties have "more crime" than do rates based on reported crime. By the latter measure, Maui and Honolulu (not Hawaii County, as below) generally had "more property crime" over the past decade. Notes on data quality and data patterns for social indicators related to substance abuse.
Importance of the Indicator: Property crimes include larceny-theft, burglary, auto theft, and arson. Such crimes affect the safety and well-being of community members. They hold potential for more violent crimes to be committed in the process. Property crimes are often associated with the use of substances.
