Technical Notes: The source of the numerator is Hawaii State Dept. of Health, Office of Health Status Monitoring, Research & Statistics Sec. The source of the denominator is U.S. Census Bureau -- 1990-99 County Population Estimates and 2000 Census data. Adolescent suicides are, fortunately, a rare event. This means that numbers are small and -- as always with small numbers -- there can be great variations from year to year. In 1999, the State Dept. of Health changed some coding procedures for all deaths; the DOH may later revise pre-1999 numbers to make them more consistent. Notes on data quality and data patterns for social indicators related to substance abuse.
Importance of the Indicator: Deaths of teenagers by suicide are potentially preventable and, as such, represent serious failings in society. They are a sorrow to the families and a loss of potential benefit to the community. These deaths can also be a measure of the ability of teenagers to make safe and healthy choices regarding their lives. Substance abuse is a major risk factor for suicide according to the American Psychiatric Association.
