Student Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Use Study Every two years, the State of Hawai‘i Department of Health, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division (ADAD) and the University of Hawai‘i Speech Department collaborate in conducting a study of 6th-, 8th-, 10th-, and 12th-grade public and private school students. The study is designed to assess prevalence and trends in substance abuse, treatment needs, and risk and protective factors that predict substance use and abuse among Hawai‘i's youth. Reports are available for the surveys conducted in the following years: Community Reports
In the year 2000, the survey was administered to over 25,000 students in 198 public and 39 private schools statewide. This study indicated that substance abuse rates among Hawai‘i's youth are decreasing except for the use of MDMA, or "ecstasy," which is on the rise. Community Reports
