Average length of stay in nursing facility

Definition: Average number of days a nursing facility resident stays per admission

Notes: The average length of stay is calculated by dividing the total number of patient-days by the number of admissions. Nursing facility residents' length of stay is affected by: (a) a facility's ability to appropriately discharge patients from the facility or to another type of bed based on the patientís condition; (b) the availability of services in the community or beds needed at other facilities; and (c) the proportion of very seriously ill patients the facility cares for.
