Indicator information

65+: Obese

Definition: Percentage of people aged 65 and over who, under federal guidelines, are considered obese based on self-reported weight and height, three-year average

Notes: The data are from Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS). Body mass index (BMI) has been calculated as weight (in kg) divided by height squared (in meters squared). BMI greater than or equal to 30.0 is classified as obesity. Percentage is a 3-year average, which helps to reduce the year-to-year fluctuation due to small numbers. Percentage is reported under the year at the midpoint of the 3-year period. National data is the median of the 50 states and the District of Columbia.
