Partners Against Asthma Hawai‘i has one of the highest asthma death rates in the United States. Approximately 88,000 people in Hawai‘i have asthma and, in 1994, it cost the Hawai‘i economy approximately $43 million in direct and indirect costs.* Particularly vulnerable are our children. In 1999, 31,614 children 0-14 years of age suffered from asthma. Partners Against Asthma is coalition comprised of members from various sectors of the community, including state and local agencies, non-profit organizations, medical and community health centers, all of the major islands, and parents of asthmatic children. Together we are working to reduce the prevalence and negative consequences of asthma among Hawai‘i's children from birth to 12 years of age. Our objectives are:
*Direct costs associated with asthma include doctors' visits, hospitalizations, and medication for asthma care. Indirect costs include costs attributed to asthma deaths and missed school and work days. Online Data:
