Family Resource Kit

The Family Resource Kit is a comprehensive set of print and video resource materials for families with young children, focus on optimizing the care and development of children from birth to five years of age.

The print materials consist of 92 articles covering child development, parenting, nutrition, resource management, and health issues that families face in their daily lives. The articles are divided into five units: Family Foundations, Infants, Toddlers, Preschoolers, and Special Topics. The print materials:

  • Translate research findings into clear and practical information families can use.
  • Are culturally sensitive, non-judgmental, easy to read, attractively presentable, and capable of high quality reproduction.
  • Are designed for use by family services agencies.
  • Are also available in Tagalog and Chinese.
The video series, Celebrating Family, uses a T.V.-magazine format and features real families with diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds dealing with issues that affect families and communities today. The six shows are Responsibility, Communication, Health, Character Building, Challenges, and Partnerships. The video series emphasizes the following:
  • Families, their members, and their communities make important contributions to each other.
  • Families are responsible for guiding and supporting the physical, emotional, intellectual, and moral development of their children, and for socializing children into the adults they will become.
  • There are many different types of families and "right ways" to raise children, reflecting different family and cultural values.
  • Resiliency and flexibility are crucial for a family in these times of rapid change.
Show 5, Challenges, won first- place honors in the National Council on Family Relations' 29th Annual Media Awards Competition (1997). The series is available for purchase from the Center on the Family.

The project Family Resource Kit was funded by a federal grant from the Department of Health and Human Services.
